Description
Sweden’s flag in smaller format 10 x 15 cm.
The history of Sweden’s flag can be traced back to the middle of the 16th century. The model was certainly taken from Denmark, which has long had the red and white cross flag Dannebrogen as its symbol. The colors come from the national coat of arms’ three golden crowns in a blue field.
Flag parties have been held at Skansen since the 1890s and from 1916 we have more officially and across the country celebrated Swedish Flag Day on June 6, the date of Gustav Vasa’s election as King of Sweden in 1523 and of the form of government in 1809, which ratified important civic rights such as freedom of conscience, freedom of the press and security of person and property. Since 1983, this day has been given the rank of national day.
